Last week, my client forwarded me an invite with a subject line that sounded like it came from the future.
Still time to register: An operational guide to agentic commerce.
Their note was simple: “No idea what this is.”
That reaction is normal.
Here is the plain-English version. People are increasingly using AI assistants to do real work on their behalf. Not just “summarize this” work. Actual “go sign me up,” “buy this,” “renew that,” “fill out the form,” “set up the account” work.
This is not a payments trend. It is an operations and expectations trend.
If you lead a nonprofit, you don’t need to rebuild everything for AI agents. But you do want to get ready for a near future where:
- Your next website visitor might be an AI agent
- Your next form submission might be completed by an assistant, not a person
- Your next fraud attempt might be automated end to end
Below are three practical areas to focus on. No hype. Just readiness.
1) Readiness: What workflows do you want an AI to complete?
The first question is not “Will AI agents interact with us?” The question is: when they do, what should they be allowed to do without creating risk or extra staff work?
Start by listing the workflows that matter most to your organization:
- Donate
- Register for an event
- Apply for a program
- Submit an intake form
- Request services
- Renew, upgrade, or change a subscription (if you have one)
Then ask:
- Where do we already have human review? (If a human approves the final step, you are more protected.)
- Where do we rely on “the person filling this out” being the real person? (That assumption is about to get weaker.)
- Where would an AI agent reduce friction for the user? (Good.)
- Where would it create confusion, errors, or support tickets? (Bad.)
A helpful mindset: treat AI agents like a new kind of power user. They can move fast, they can submit a lot of requests, and they will do exactly what your workflows allow.
2) Discoverability: Can an AI accurately explain what you do?
In the near future, more people will ask their AI assistant:
- “ What does this nonprofit do?”
- “Is this program a fit for me?”
- “What’s the difference between these two options?”
If your website is hard for a human to understand quickly, it will be hard for an AI to describe accurately. This is not about gaming search. It is about clarity.
A quick readiness checklist:
- Do you have one clear description of your organization in plain language?
- Do your programs have crisp “who it’s for” and “what you walk away with” sections?
- Do you have an FAQ that answers the questions people actually ask before they apply, donate, or register?
- Do your forms and confirmation pages clearly state what happens next?
If you do nothing else this quarter, tighten the language around your core offers and your next-step flows. That work pays off for humans and machines.
If you want to go one notch more technical, it is worth making sure your site structure is clean and standard:
- One clear H1 per page
- Logical H2 and H3 headings
- Descriptive link text (not “click here”)
- Consistent page templates for programs and services
- Basic schema markup where it applies (Organization, FAQ, Event)
You don’t need to become an SEO expert to do this. You just need your pages to be easy to parse.
3) Fraud and authorization: How do you know the agent is allowed?
As automation increases, fraud patterns evolve.
There are usually three layers of protection:
- Payments layer: your payment provider will catch a meaningful amount of abuse
- Process layer: your internal review steps catch another layer
- Account layer: login, verification, and account practices are the long-term foundation
Process is the part many teams miss. Tools help, but process matters.
If you’ve ever seen someone try to bypass identity verification with a photo of someone else’s ID on a screen, and then pressure the administrator to over-ride the failure result because they’re friends with a board member, you already understand the problem. The technology can be solid. The system can still be pressured at the edges.
The best posture is not “buy a tool and relax.” It is “design the workflow so it’s hard to exploit, and easy for staff to handle consistently.”
That often means:
- Clear rules for when staff can override verification (and when they cannot)
- A second set of eyes for exceptions
- Step-up verification for higher-risk actions
- Rate limits and monitoring for unusual patterns
You don’t need perfect security. You need a thoughtful posture that can evolve.
Bonus: “Prove you’re human” tools are getting weird. Evaluate calmly.
You will see more tools that promise to verify that a person is a “natural person,” or that a piece of work was created by a human. In practice, these approaches tend to fall into a few buckets:
- Identity verification: confirming a real person is behind an account
- Content detection: analyzing text or images to estimate whether AI helped generate them
- Provenance signals: looking at how something was created - for example, version history and editing patterns over time
These approaches may become useful in specific contexts. They also raise more questions than they answer.
For example:
- If a tool relies on identity verification, what happens when someone tries to use a real person’s ID, or pressures staff to override a failed check?
- If a tool relies on content detection, how often is it wrong, and what is your appeals process?
- If a tool relies on version history, can someone fake that history if they know what the system is looking for?
Which leads to the simpler question most organizations should start with: What does “human” actually mean in our context, and what are we willing to enforce?
If you can’t answer that, you’re not ready to buy tools. You’re ready to define policy.
And sometimes, the best solution isn’t more automation, it’s putting a human in the right spot at the right moment, with clear rules.
